You can live without jazz, but why would you want to? The musical style formed in New Orleans at the start of the previous century conquered the world at lightning speed. And though its descendants have moved far from the genre's early Afro-American roots, it could be no other way, given that versatility, formability and a high degree of adaptability are the very essence of jazz. This musical programme from the head of the Liszt Academy's jazz department Kristóf Bacsó and his academy students promises to be an unmissable introduction to the world of jazz.

Though it is easier to recognise jazz than to define it, improvisation is clearly the main factor that closely binds together the genre's many dozens of variations and sub-genres. Jazz's improvisational roots partly hark back to blues music. Unlike classical music, which is strongly determined by the details found in the sheet music, with jazz inspiration comes in the moment, and a faith in creation through shared improvisation. No two performances are the same: everything depends on the mood and the experience of the perfomer, not to mention the audience and the musicians involved. It is a thrilling exercise to reconcile improvisation and rhythm, as the sounds always unfolds according to a particular beat that provides a certain degree of restriction to the total freedom of improvisation. On this occasion, characteristic jazz sounds such as the trumpet, saxophone, piano, trombone, double bass and naturally the drums will all have a role to play. The stage is set for promising members of the coming generation: students of the Liszt Academy will show us how to put together a typical jazz group. The artistic director for the sextet, which has been formed especially for the occasion, is the superb saxophonist Kristóf Bacsó.
The new head of the Liszt Academy's jazz department has taught in Budapest, Paris and Boston. He has won numerous prestigious jazz competitions and acclaim from listeners from America to Japan.
