Joy and sadness, fear and surprise, and of course, anger: we have already been able to learn about the impact which the same emotions that pervade and define our daily lives have had on the greatest composers of classical music at the various episodes of the Elemental Emotions in Music series of the Matinee Concerts. But what happens when different emotions that are generally relatively clearly separable are instead mixed and connected? Pianist Balázs Fülei and singer Szélpál Szilveszter will be pointing out some hitherto hidden interrelationships.

It is time to sum everything up: in a professional interpretation seasoned with expert commentary serving as a summary of the Elemental Emotions in Music series, we will learn about the ways in which the basic emotions identified in the human psyche appear in the works of well-known composers such as Schumann, Schubert, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Debussy or Bartók. In the meantime, of course, we will also be learning about ourselves and how, and by what means either simple or complex, a high-quality composition exerts an effect on us. Listening to the music, we ponder over what last brought us carefree joy. No matter how much we want to keep it away from us, we must all deal with sadness as well throughout our lives: music helps us survive farewells and grief. Fear and its close relative surprise can both be caused by some stimulus or unexpected event: the precise essence of this is a disruption of the usual order of things. We should not fear anger, either, which while it may momentarily cloud our judgement from time to time, is not worth suppressing. The two excellent musicians Balázs Fülei and Szilveszter Szélpál have put all of this in a broader context: with their help, we will not only feel, but also understand why and how a piece of music affects our emotions.
