“Where we lived in a village by a stream trapped in a valley near a countryside town, there were no opera records or university degrees. And there was no telephone, no gas, no sewage pipes, no roads or public transport. I first went to Budapest aged 13 – to the sanatorium on Szabadság Hill. Four years later, the Opera House was the destination for a class field trip: We saw Fidelio from seats in the heavens and I only remember falling asleep, even though I was already learning to sing. A few weeks later, however, my teacher put on a record and now here I am and it is up to me to convince you of the beauty of the opera. Maybe I am your record this time: play me!” (Szilveszter Ókovács)
