Each year, the Rising Stars programme organised by the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO) casts the spotlight on young artists who are no longer really 'discoveries', as they have already made many notable achievements. What one should focus on instead is the speed with which their careers are moving forward. Stuttgart-based percussionist Vanessa Porter has earned great acclaim as both a member of Duo Porter and a soloist through her unbiased openness expressed through both her thrillingly experimental programmes and her musical outlook.

After studying at London's Royal College of Music and Musikhochschule Lübeck, she completed her master's degree at the music academy in Stuttgart. She has triumphed at numerous international competitions, notably winning first prize at the August Everding International Competition in Munich, the Luxembourg International Percussion Competition and Italy's Percussive Art Contest. A frequent guest at festivals, she regularly performs concerts in Europe and both North and South America. Just as often as taking the stage as a soloist, she plays alongside her sister and fellow percussionist Jessica Porter, as part of their group Duo Porter. At their concerts, they enjoy combining percussion sounds with electronic music, improvising on already existing material. She is a firm believer in introducing unusual elements into her art, performing works that incorporate both the spoken voice and 'body percussion'. Porter has compiled her Rising Stars programme out of contemporary works that are nothing other than experimental. The sounds between the pieces are composed by Vanessa Porter and created by Daniel Mudrack.

The Messenger by Aperghis was commissioned by Kölner Philharmonie (KölnMusik) and Festspielhaus Baden-Baden in the framework of ECHO Rising Stars and by Kölner Philharmonie (KölnMusik) for the »non bthvn projekt« 2020.
