"I was ten years old when I posted the words 'Tamás Pálfavi, trumpet player' on the door of the rehearsal room. And I've been moving toward that goal ever since.” This is how this year's Hungarian participant in the Rising Stars programme describes his relationship with his calling.

In the beginning, of course, it was not quite so clear. "When I was very little, I didn't want to play music at all. My parents tried to persuade me, since they hadn't had the chance to go to music school themselves, and they wanted at least for their two children to learn an instrument. I was resistant, though. All I wanted to do was play football. One time, they took me to the music school in Salgótarján, but I told them that I refused to learn music, so we might as well go home. Later, I was the one who asked to give it a try, since my older sister had started to play piano and the idea started to appeal to me. I decided that I wanted to be a drummer, but there were no spaces left on the course at the time. So I tried a few instruments - the oboe, clarinet and violin. Finally, one of the singing teachers came down the hall, took one look at me and told my father that I had the mouth of a trumpeter.”
It appears that the singing teacher had a good eye. Since that day, Tamás Pálfalvi and his "trumpeter's mouth” have won numerous competitions here in Hungary and abroad. He has studied at Bard College in the United States and at Budapest's Franz Liszt Academy of Music. A soloist since 2008, he made his début on Baroque trumpet in 2014. The selection of extremely colourful and excruciatingly difficult compositions by 20th century composers that he will play at his Rising Stars concert are also complex in terms of their genre - as they also involve dance.
