In their upcoming traditionally structured concert, the Szent István Philharmonic will perform a selection of well-known and often played works from the Romantic era - traditional in the sense that it will open with an overture, followed by a concerto, with the audience getting to hear a symphony in the second half of the programme.
The opera's passionate overture presents the most important themes in the work, with the stormy sea depicted by a churning string section. Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor reveals just as much of the carefree poetry from the series Lieder ohne Worte that the composer wrote for the piano as it does of the fairy-world of the incidental music to A Midsummer Night's Dream. Dvořák, for his part, completed his Eighth Symphony in 1889, while he was on a summer holiday.
Flowing through every measure of this four-movement symphony is this summer atmosphere and the calm of the Czech countryside. Serving as the soloist for the evening will be Barnabás Kelemen. In addition to his performances both in Hungary and abroad, the successful Kossuth Prize-winning artist also teaches as an associate professor with the chamber music department at the Liszt Academy. Martin Rajna is one of the most outstanding talents of the young Hungarian generation of conductors, recognised for his partnerships with internationally renowned soloists. Since 2021, he has worked with the Győr Philharmonic Orchestra as chief conductor.
