Contributing a piece each to this concert by the MÁV Symphony Orchestra will be the two great Late Romantic composers Tchaikovsky and Mahler. Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 2, which has remained almost unknown in the shadow of its popular B-flat minor counterpart, will be performed with the world-famous Elisabeth Leonskaja as soloist. While Mahler's First Symphony was first premièred here in Budapest under the baton of the composer himself, the special feature of this concert is having the beautifully poetical movement that the composer removed from of the work after the first performance being played as an "overture”.

The compositions on the programme of the MÁV Symphony Orchestra's concert were all created within a decade of each other, and also share a kinship of spirit for us to discover. Many people are unaware that Tchaikovsky composed two additional piano concertos in the "shadow" of his famous first one in B-flat minor, and this makes it worthwhile getting to know the second, which dates from 1879/80. Although Mahler premièred his First Symphony here in Budapest as a five-movement work, he later removed the second movement from the score. This movement is the "Blumine”, lovely and romantic flower music that absolutely merits the audience's attention. Born in Tbilisi in 1945, Elisabeth Leonskaja is a living legend. She started playing the piano at the age of seven and by the age of eleven had already played Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major with an orchestra. She has lived in Austria since 1978, giving concerts and making records. Taking the conductor's podium for the evening will be Róbert Farkas, who has served as chief conductor of the MÁV Symphony Orchestra since 2021.
