The coronavirus pandemic has brought trials for everyone, but those who are resourceful can discover hidden reserves of creativity and find new solutions in unexpected situations. At this concert, the artists of the Hungarian National Philharmonic, playing without a conductor, will perform entertaining classical works of multiple movements in a programme that interested viewers will be able to watch and hear as part of the Müpa Home series. To display their own independent performance skills: this is an enticing opportunity for any orchestral musician!
Claude Gervaise's Old French Dances whisk us back to the centuries of the Renaissance: listening to the tight rhythms and old-style harmonies, one can almost see dancers in lace-trimmed dress of velvet and silk moving before one's eyes. Elgar's Serenade for Strings in E minor is a different sort of world: its veiled tones and soft melancholy evoke the sensuality, seasoned with decadence, of the late Romantic era. Mozart's divertimento treats the listener to the grace of the Viennese Classical style, impeccably proportioned movements, a lissom sound and, not least of all, a sense of humour. And to conclude the evening, Grieg's Holberg Suite takes us back to the Romantic era, this time, however, with the 19th century extending its hand to the 18th, since the movements - which the Norwegian composer created in 1884 to mark the bicentenary of the birth of the writer Ludvig Holberg - are archaising in character, as their titles themselves suggest: Prelude, Sarabande, Gavotte, Air, Rigaudon.
