Today, seeing a woman displaying incredible skill with an instrument is an increasingly familiar sight on the jazz scene. There is no doubt, however, that a musician must have truly amazing ability to, for example, become the regular saxophone player in Beyoncé's predominantly female touring band. Tia Fuller, whose musical career began at the start of the 2000s, has also played alongside Esperanza Spalding, Dianne Reeves and Nancy Wilson, while her latest album, the 2018 Diamond Cut, features a range of special guests including Dave Holland and JackDeJohnette, with Terri Lyne Carrington performing producer duties.
On top of all this, Fuller also fulfils an important role in jazz education as a tenured professor at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. She has appeared on numerous TV shows, including the Oprah Winfrey Show, the Today Show and Good Morning America, while she has also performed at the prize ceremonies for the BET Awards, the American Music Awards and the Grammy Awards. She has even played at the White House for President Barack Obama as a soloist in Beyoncé's band. Her albums have been gaining increasing acclaim: the 2010 Decisive Steps spent two weeks at the top of the JazzWeek chart, while the same publication voted the record as the winner of Best Jazz Album. The 2012 Angelic Warrior was enthusiastically received by the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times and featured on the cover of the Jazz Education Journal, the JazzTimes and DownBeat magazine. Along with her quartet, Tia has travelled across a number of countries in Africa and Europe and has played in some of the most prestigious clubs and concert halls in the world, including Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola at the Lincoln Center.
