The popular saxophonist János Ávéd dissects issues of improvisation, examining what role the 12-note scale might take on when jazz musicians are playing extemporaneously. Martin Breternitz, a researcher from the University of Jena, will discuss what networks, structures and informal opportunities are currently available to German jazz musicians and how the evidently well-oiled German jazz world is set up. Márton Szegedi, a Hungarian lecturer at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, published a 2019 monograph on Gábor Szabó, the guitarist who found global fame in the United States in the 1960s. His presentation, which will also serve as a book launch, points out the influences that contributed to the development of Szabó's distinctive sound. The closing roundtable of the symposium will bring three leading experts to help resolve, with answers from their respective fields of study, the dual question of whether Hungarian jazz is a cultural legacy and, if so, how to preserve it.
