Kőszegi is an artist who has always avoided conventional solutions, instead opting to experiment with new forms of music-making and to explore possibilities for exceeding boundaries, all without ever losing sight of the musical influences whose impact was always with him. His great predecessor Max Roach is one of the artists to whom he will pay tribute when he invites the Budapest Strings Chamber Ensemble to join him in playing both well-known standards and novel-sounding pieces alike. Similarly unique - as it dispenses with the double bass - will be the line-up in which the star of the show is joined by his grand old colleague Béla Lakatos Szakcsi on piano and Roland Szentpáli, another great tester of limits, on tuba and contemporary instruments. Last to play will be Kőszegi's legendary and, in its own era, unparalleled ensemble, Rhythm & Brass, which on this occasion will include, in addition to the tuba, trumpeter Balázs Pecze, who is by now well past being a member of the rising generation, and saxophonist Tony Lakatos, a leading fixture on the international scene, with its 21st-century sound (and electronica) supplied by guitarist Bence Bécsy, who has backed up productions by Zita Gereben, Vera Jónás and BG5. The arrangements are the work of Péter Rozsnyói, who will take the stage on the piano at the concert.
On this evening, as we listen to his music, we will get a chance to celebrate more than just the artist, winner of both the Liszt Award and the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary. It will also be a celebration of the creative power of music.
