The dead man who hasn't died, someone who is alive but believed dead, incest, murder, blood. An easterly wind that drives everybody to distraction. A real Grand Guignol - you might say about Pedro Almodóvar's 2006 film. Yet Volver isn't much like any horror film. It's closer to real life. It's neither the first nor the last film from the Spanish director to examine the mother-daughter relationship. It is also one of the most exciting, though it doesn't just look at the nature of the attractions and repulsions between mother and daughter but also the destiny of each that reflects in the other. In this film, these destinies are made even more complicated by dealing with three generations of women. Destinies that have been endured and freely chosen.
Almodóvar has always been happy to play with his viewers by delaying revealing the past actions that define the fate of his heroes. Not to annoy us, but because most of the characters are not willing to go there themselves. Yet the moment of clarity must arrive. Volver is a little bit like the famous Canadian psychiatrist Eric Berne's book, What Do You Say After You Say Hello? Why is it that the more you decide that you want to break from the path your parents took, the more likely it is you will end up just like them?
And yet we laugh. While sometimes we get sad. In this film, the cinematic world, with ghosts here and dead people there, works in a similar way emotionally speaking, like the everyday of the esteemed viewer: sometimes tragic, at other times comedic.

The screening has been made possible with the cooperation of the Spanish Embassy in Budapest.
