Who is Dr Robert Ledgard, played by Antonio Banderas in this Almodóvar film? Some kind of 21st century Dr Frankenstein? Or does he bear more of a resemblance to the sculptor Pygmalion from Greek mythology? In fact, it is probably best not to limit our thoughts on this film by trying to compare it to anything else. The Skin I Live In is far too sensitive for that.
From a certain point of view, it depicts a person striving for perfection. The kind of person who combines knowledge with good taste, while at the same time passions flow within him that he is unable to keep in check. And if we go further, the picture changes once again, and we can ruminate on what kind of contradictory feelings and values are produced in our heroes. From the sublime to the lowest of the low. Kind-heartedness and vengeance. And what are we to make of the fact that Almodóvar's film was released in 2011, but the story starts in Toledo in 2012? Is this a sci-fi movie? Let's just put it this way: a different interpretation for every viewer. And countless references.
At the start of the film, a book appears on the screen, a common occurrence in Almodóvar films. The book by the (now) Nobel-prize winning Alice Munro. She actually won the Nobel Prize in 2013, while Almodóvar in 2011 wrote his film Julieta based on her short stories. But there's no need to tell you everything. This is a multi-layered story about loneliness, human loss, passion, and about us. And it also contains the director's usual knowing wink to the audience: what's more important, achieving something or the path you take to get there?
