In present-day Hungary, you will rarely hear talk of the working class. For British filmmakers, however, manual or blue-collar workers have always held a certain significance. Which is understandable: social advancement and mobility have deep roots in the storytelling tradition. There is no question that by the close of the 20th century, the consequences of outsourcing production and the closure of mines and factories had become a key issue. In Peter Cattaneo's film, six steel workers who have lost their jobs decide to retrain themselves in a new profession: striptease dancing.

Okay, they're not quite the Chippendales, but beggars can't be choosers. In fact, despite - or perhaps because of - that fact, they become ever more popular. Much like the film itself, which was a smash hit. Made with a USD 3.5 million budget, The Fully Monty took USD 250 million in the cinemas, won a whole host of awards and was even adapted into a musical and theatrical play. We can safely say that the viewers didn't buy a ticket to ogle the bodies of the men on display. So why did this light, bittersweet comedy become such a global success? Our heroes' goals are far from stratospheric. They have child support to pay, or don't want people to find out that they've been fired... In other words, this story is not about exotic islands, yachts, villas and luxury cars. The Full Monty is a companion piece to all those films where the main characters start off in a losing position only to rise from a position of apparent hopelessness and fight back. And let's face it, these are also loveable stories, full of minor human desires, triumphs and failures. And the importance of saying 'I won't give up!'

In English, with Hungarian subtitles.
The discussions before and after the screenings are conducted in Hungarian.
