A sense of guilt without sin. Penance without vices. In his latest film, Julieta, Pedro Almodóvar once again shows us a new side to his talent. How many sides does he have? Though we may not manage to showcase them all in this MüpaCinema autumn series, we can at least endeavour to show the most characteristic.
It's easy to think that Almodóvar's distinctive style is more important than his stories and his parables, but you cannot be too sure. When you settle down in the cinema to watch one of his films, it is like stepping into Almodóvar's own private world, particularly given how often the Spanish director recalls faces and situations from his earlier films. But this world has many angles. It is part grotesque, part lyrical, sometimes taking trips back in time (through flashbacks), sometimes trapping characters in a suffocating stitch in time. At times, the desire of the body holds sway, at others, it is the spirit of the characters that drives their destiny. Julieta shows us a previously unseen aspect of the Spanish director's world. Reflections on desire, need, and on how, by blaming ourselves, we can affect, or indeed ruin, our fate.

The screening takes place in cooperation with the Spanish Embassy.
