This Pedro Almodóvar film won the Oscar for Best Film Not in the English Language in 2000, in addition to every imaginable Spanish film prize going, a César Award, a BAFTA prize, a Golden Globe, the prize for Best Director at Cannes, a Donatello and a European Film Award. At the same time, it is the Spanish director's most hotly debated film. Which is perfectly understandable, in part because it signified a significant change in Almodóvar's artistic path. His earlier films were rawer and more vitriolic, with little room for sentiment. Now, however, alongside the strange, bizarre and the surreal, something completely different arrives on the scene: human warmth. The other reason critics and viewers were so divided was that All About My Mother is decidedly provocative. Prostitutes, gay men, lesbians, transsexuals, drugs, AIDS, disease and accidents, muddled relationships… Is that enough for you? Reading these lines, it sounds absolutely blood-curdling. It is hard to imagine anyone being able to surpress their prejudices and cope with the tumult of emotions that this film brings up.
Be that as it may, in the process of watching the film, something strange happens to us. The miracle of cinema - or theatre - occurs when things rise up from within you. And here they emerge from the extremes of painful yet hilarious human stories. And in their own strange way, these stories thread together and grow. This film has everything: a flood of feelings and passions. An inundation, a deluge! What sticks with you throughout these bizarre experiences is how tragedy and loss are overcome by life. That special thing that we all experience between birth and death.

The screening takes place in cooperation with the Spanish Embassy in Budapest.
