The contrast between free will and absolute control is a reoccurring theme in British satirical films. At first glance, Absolutely Anything is a simple farce. The small, grey hero - played by Simon Pegg - is awarded complete power by the Galactic Council so he can prove to them that the human race is worth keeping around. Hilarity ensues, under the direction of the former Monty Python member Terry Jones. Incidentally, the film debuted in the UK six months before the Brexit referendum announcement. Food for thought...

This year marks 50 years since the start of Monty Python's Flying Circus. As a writer, director and actor, Terry Jones was one of its key members. (After the TV series ended, Jones also directed The Holy Grail, The Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life.) Absolutely Anything brings the members of the old team back together, only now as members of the Galactic Council. The story is incredibly wicked. At first it feels like a reworking of the Bible story Sodom and Gomorrah: is there a single good man to be found on the face of the Earth? But that's not what it is about. It is, instead, a parable on whether omnipotence can ever make the world a better place. It might not surprise you to learn that, as a sci-fi and philosophical satire, the film contains traces of Douglas Adams. Except that this is a story from the 2010s. An era where individuals and special-interest groups are capable of instigating faster and more radical changes than ever before. Is that a good thing? Well, let's allow the top dogs to decide that one, shall we?

In English, with Hungarian subtitles.
The discussions before and after the screenings are conducted in Hungarian.
