Who wouldn't want to know what happens at an opera or ballet rehearsal, how folk music ensembles practice, what a day in the life of a jazz band looks like, or how a symphony orchestra works and prepares for a concert? The Behind the Scenes concerts provide a glimpse into the everyday work of musicians and - through directions and explanations, and the repeated practising and playing of individual passages - the musical process itself. In the second half of each programme, the audience will see and hear excerpts from the works they have already been introduced to in the context of an uninterrupted performance on stage.
There is no time of year as rich in events as the combination of winter solstice and Christian traditions that makes up the Christmas and New Year period in December and January. From the drinks sipped on St. Lucy's Day, the nativity scene at Christmas and the carols sung on St. Stephan's Day to the chanting on New Year's Eve and the stars given out on the Epiphany, countless folk customs were enjoyed by boys and girls, children and adults in the Carpathian Basin as they wished each other good health and prosperity into the new year, while remembering the significant dates of the Christian calendar, and Christmas in particular. These are the traditions revived by these guardians of tradition. Alongside the spoken and dramatic elements, dance also has an important part to play in their programme.

Before the performance, between 9.45 and 10.30, we will be running a free (and playful) interactive session for children entitled Tune-up in the Auditorium, for which individual ticket holders and groups are welcome. Please register for this free session via csip@mupa.hu by midnight on the Wednesday before the performance, specifying the number of participating children and their ages. The session will take place with a minimum of six children.
