The stars of this series are the 'tools” of music: its instruments. Children attending will get the chance to familiarise themselves with these instruments in the context of authentic live music under the guidance of expert musicians. In this half of the year, we will be travelling the globe. The children will come across music of folk original and rarely seen instruments from various parts of the world in the course of the concerts and the demonstrations that follow them.
The kaval is an instrument of Persian origin that was brought to the Balkan peninsula by Arab peoples and enjoys great popularity in the folk music of the Balkan region. Made out of wood, the kaval is a long pipe that can be separated into three parts. The rim is on the top section and is generally made of bone or hardwood and richly decorated. The middle third is where the kaval player changes the notes by covering eight holes. There are a further four holes in the bottom third, but these are known as "the devil's holes” as they are never covered.

This series is produced in partnership with the Ethnosound world music instrument shop.
