There is something truly magical about theatre. Stories are brought to life before our eyes through the acting on stage, the scenery and the costumes. This is doubly true for musical drama, as the performers on stage sing their lines, while their personalities and the situations they find themselves in are depicted through the unique means of music. The Opera Workshop performances provide a taste of this genre for 8- to 14-year-olds.

Of the late works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, The Magic Flute could be termed the purest, noblest and most exalted - except it isn't really an opera: it is, strictly speaking, a singspiel, a related genre in which the singers deliver lines of prose between the sung numbers. This is exactly why it is such a wonderful idea to start one's acquaintance with the musical stage with this piece - since the performers are not singing constantly, but instead only occasionally burst out into song. There is no need to jump into the deep end of the pool at one's first swimming lesson.
The plot is simple: Prince Tamino liberates Pamina, who is being held captive by her own father, Sarastro. He thus wins her hand - the hand of the girl whose mother is the Queen of the Night. It is a true fairy tale with a dragon, trials by fire and water - and what is more: a storehouse of mysterious philosophies, moral guidance and hidden wisdom. It playfully teaches the same thing that every fairy tale expresses differently, even if the core message never changes: 'Be good!'
Of course, not everything is quite this simple: several different paths lie before the protagonists, and the plot is inhabited by various characters: some majestic, courageous and well-meaning, while others are earthbound, cowardly or wicked. It is this colourful company that the cast of singers in this production will evoke, accompanied by Sinfonietta Erudita playing under the baton of conductor Péter Oberfrank and in a staging imagined by director Attila Toronykőy.

Between 9.45 and 10.30, we will be running a free playful, interactive session for children entitled Tune-Up. We look forward to welcoming groups and individuals who hold tickets to the subsequent performance.Register via email to csip@mupa.hu, stating the number of participants and their ages, by the Wednesday before the performance at the latest. The activity is recommended for children aged 6 and over, and will take place with a minimum of six children.
