This year's Musicmania series addresses the topic of diversity of music in relation to genres. You will find that - surprisingly - in classical music, there are as many interpretations as there are genres. Individual genres differ not just in terms of their mode of performance, but also in terms of their musical language, expressiveness, message and presentation.

It is one thing when an instrumental soloist responds to the orchestra, and another when a vocalist's aria illustrates or even counteracts the accompaniment. This concert attempts to track the evolution of the symphony genre. It examines how a symphony comes into being, from its simple beginnings to a form of music that is capable of telling entire life stories. From the enormous repertoire of symphonic music, the listener is given an opportunity to get a glimpse of every little part of this endlessly changing, wonderful world. The Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra and Dániel Dinyés are striving to reconstruct that process of music history in which the genre of symphony gained more and more significance over the years to become, in the hands of Haydn, the most important genre in the history of music. What makes this genre (and form) so irrepressible, what possibilities does it offer for composers, and why are there so many symphonies in existence? Every single one is different, yet they are all somehow tied together, they all have something that we can identify as a symphony, and which could be nothing else. The performers will help to provide a key to the joy of listening to music, so that we can recognise even the smallest element in the creation of music and understand how listening to it can enrich our world.
