Couldn't hit all the right notes at school but still felt you had a talent for music? Then beatboxing is for you - and what's more, all of your friends are bound to think it's cool. As a method, beatboxing produces sounds radically different to spoken voice and strikingly convincing imitations of real life. It can also be mastered without any special musical training: jazz musician Ernő Zoltán Rubik will share his secrets, techniques and tricks with participants.

To beatbox, you need nothing more than your mouth, lips, tongue and vocal cords, not to mention a bit of rhythm. When beatboxing first appeared as an element of the hip-hop style in 1970s New York, perhaps no one could have guessed it would take off to such an extent in such a short space of time. In addition to helping us take stock of the physiological and acoustic properties of our sound-forming organs, it also became clear that we still have countless possibilities at our disposal on top of traditional techniques for create sounds - the beatbox exploits these. As time passed, it moved beyond its role in the foundations of rap music, as increasingly professional, constantly evolving performers realised that they could imitate almost any sound. Beatboxing has even had its own world championship since 2005. The extraordinary, versatile jazz musician Ernő Zoltán Rubik will discuss (among other things) beatboxing's simple and more complicated trade secrets, its history in Hungary and internationally, and the countless possibilities it presents. You will see how the sound elements that work in conjunction with each other can be applied brilliantly in music composition and vocal improvisation, though you will also learn how to entertain your friends with a simple beat!
