In recent years, these two viewpoints have framed a lively debate in relation to women's literature. But things are not quite that simple, of course. There is no doubt that for a long time, the gender of the author determined the position they occupied, or could occupy, in the literary food chain, and that the work of women was placed under a different category to that of men. Now, perhaps that situation has changed: ever more work from female authors is being met with critical acclaim, and the number of books that deal with the position of women and their unique experiences has multiplied. We can look forward to a hugely exciting discussion that follows the twists and turns of this rocky road.
