Shakespeare's name is synonymous with theatre across the world. And not just because he wrote those famous words about the relationship between theatre and the world and about life and the theatre: 'All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts,' but because he could make theatre out of anything: from the world, and from life. His work can be staged in any era and interpreted by any director and theatre - Shakespeare's enduring popularity lies in the way his expression of universal themes can be understood by people of any age and any level of education and remain entertaining, instructive and thought-provoking throughout.
Why this should be the case is due to many things and can be explained in many ways. The first is that he was a theatre man in his blood. He had an insider's knowledge of the theatre, and was fully aware of the diverse demands of the audience. As a theatre director, he knew that revenue was needed to keep a theatre going. As a playwright he knew how and why he needed to speak to the most varied layers of society. (He recognised with great sensitivity how to introduce humour, death, love, intrigue and even horror into the same play alongside philosophy and poetry.) As an actor he knew there there can be enjoyable character roles alongside starring roles and lengthy monologues. As a 'contaminator', he also knew what was worth stealing. The last of these points will also be covered in a thrilling performance from Tibor Zalán.
