Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) composed his Symphony No. 5 in 1888. It is the kind of work that can and should be discussed, as the score is full of details to notice, and there are also things to uncover and decipher in the melodic backdrop. The aim of the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra's Musicmania series is to help the audience understand how a given work was conceived and why it took on the form we know today. 'With this series, we try to offer some insight - never experienced before by audiences - into all that can happen and does happen when a composer is putting together a musical piece. How, from an incredibly large number of possibilities, one solution can appear that we might later recognise as, say, the Symphonie fantastique. How a collection of dots and lines from a pencil can become a melody or a composition that accompanies us throughout our lives. We explore the compelling and stupendously varied world of the inimitable science of instrumentation and the blending together of a range of sounds. We try to establish what brings a melody to life and how the accompaniment weaves an incredibly precise thread of feeling and form. We do all this at a leisurely pace, never rushing to bring the music that is within us into the world.'
