Henrik Ibsen personally asked Edvard Grieg to compose the incidental music to accompany the world premiere of his play Peer Gynt. Grieg also used the movements of the incidental music to create two concerto suites which are still regularly heard in concert today. The suites contain well-known movements such as Anitra's Dance, Solveig's Song and In the Hall of the Mountain King.
Rather than capturing the modernity of Ibsen's play, Grieg's incidental music instead presented a world inhabited with mythical creatures of Romantic northern forests. In 1948, the Norwegian composer Harald Saeverud wrote a new incidental music for Peer Gynt, meaning that today only parts of Grieg's music are used in productions of the play, often ironically.
