Folk instruments were originally made by musical craftsmen, simple village people living in decidedly modest circumstances. The performance style of plucked string instruments differs from the playing of other instruments. The performer plays the instrument by plucking a tensed string with a finger, nail or plectrum. As well as introducing the most popular Hungarian folk plucked string instruments and their history, this live-music show will also give a taste of the many varieties of sound that can be made by these instruments.

The Hungaria 'citera', or zither, comes from the Greek work 'kithara', and is the most characteristic plucked string Hungarian folk instrument. Its characteristic sound is a constant drone that can be made quietr or louder depending on the number and use of the accompanying strings. As far back as we can remember, the zither was considered an instrument of the poorer peasants. It can made cheaply, and is relatively easy to learn. A very mixed team will introduce listeners to the zither and the other plucked string instruments. For Zoltán 'Batyu' Farkas, a great authority on Hungarian folk culture, the Új Gereben Band is home turf. The gardon, double bass and drums play leading roles in the group's unmistakable performance style, though the zither and violin are also essential to their repertoire. László Szlama became familiar with the cobza and the zither at a young age, and has regularly helped to popularise these charming instruments both at home and abroad. Regulars at concert and music halls, the Fokos Band was formed ten years ago and completes the full array of plucked string instruments.
