Henry Purcell's ‘semi-opera' The Fairy Queen, premièred in 1692, is an adaptation of Shakespeare's comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream, in which the original text from 1595 is partly replaced by instrumental interludes. In this performance, the well-known St John's Eve story comes to life through the medium of contemporary dance, set to a selection of music assembled from instrumental movements by the Baroque composer. This style deviates in many respects from classical ballet, allowing freer motions of the upper body and abandoning strict prescriptions for posture and movement. Blending the traditions of several centuries, this production of young artists promises to be an exciting encounter between classical ballet and modern dance.

The performance will be followed by a free activity session at Banner Square called Reverberation for all holders of tickets for the performance.
