Moderato Cantabile is about passion and absence: evoking the life of the emotions, it attempts to narrate love without actually attaining it, merely outlining the map concealed beneath it. On stage, there is a room - outside of time and space - which exists according to established and fixed patterns. The figures move in this zone, this other-worldly arena, where they leave an indelible mark, tracing paths which become grooves, and anticipating spaces of freedom, however illusory and temporary.
This piece is a joint production of the Szeged Contemporary Dance Company and National Dance Theatre.

As with the passing of the seasons from spring to winter, so pass the stages of the lives of men. Though it is not the first time that this particular parallel has inspired artists, the intense female focus of this piece makes the journey particularly extraordinary. The story is guided by the writing of Kriszta Tereskova Nagy entitled Feminizma. A young girl timidly confronts the opposite sex: for her, their world is a mystery. Even later, she fails to be admitted to this world, despite her relationships. She attempts to gain her place by using masculine tools, but she is ignored. Unless she 'deploys' her body, her femininity. So she tries to live with this weapon, to use it to break through the glass ceiling which forms an imperceptible barrier between the two sexes. Upon attaining power, however, and despite her success, and bloody victory, in the end she remains alone with herself and the child that still lives within her. Finally, she dances her most beautiful dance, with Death.
The première was an event of the 2016/17 Ensemble of the Season series.

The performance is not recommended for those aged under 16.
