This dance production of La traviata promises to be a remarkably enjoyable show. Under the leadership of the pivotal director and choreographer Dóra Barta, the outstanding artists of the Kecskemét City Ballet, and the dance section of the József Katona National Theatre of Kecskemét have become one of the key Hungarian dance companies operating outside of the capital. For this production, Barta has sought a language of dance that would unify the classic novel La Dame aux Camélias by Alexandre Dumas fils with the marvellous opera that Verdi based on it. The operatic segments will be uplifting recordings by Edita Gruberová.

The plot to the production resembles a parable. Although Violetta, the principal character, enjoys being the subject of rivalry between men vying to win her affection, she is still not happy. Then - as one of life's sudden twists - she is faced with a true love of sweeping power, which from the very beginning contains the seeds of its own imminent end. In spite of this, the protagonist still gives herself over to her emotions, because she is capable of breaking free from conventions in order to experience a higher quality of life. The tragedy lies in the fact that she only has a short time to experience all this. The message from Barta and the piece is clear: it is a great privilege and joy to experience emotional fulfulment in our lives, even if only for such a short time.
La traviata has once again yielded an emblematic creative work. A wonderful artistic metamorphosis emerges from the texture of the piece: how a novel based on actual events became a stage play, which became an opera, which in turn spawned a marvellous ballet production. The dancing, music and spectacular stage set hold a cathartic contemporary dance theatre experience in store for viewers, and not just lovers of opera and contemporary ballet!

Based on Alexandre Dumas fils's work La Dame aux camélias
