The Met's new production

Thomas Adès is one of today's most popular composers of contemporary opera. Textbooks already list his previous work, The Tempest, as one of the most significant works in the repertoire. Now the Müpa Budapest audience will get to see his most recent dramatic work, The Exterminating Angel. Based on Luis Buñuel's classic film of the same title, it was declared an "exceptionally inventive and audacious” work by the New York Times after its 2016 world première in Salzburg. Adès is a virtuoso of the extreme who manages to respect hundreds of years of opera history while simultaneously revitalising it with astonishing inventiveness. The Exterminating Angel is a surreal fantasy about a dinner party following an opera performance. At the gathering, the guests fall asleep, and the next morning find themselves unable to go home: although the doors are open, not one of them is capable of exiting the salon. While this thrillingly composed ensemble piece marks the Met début for quite a few of the singers in the cast, others are deservedly popular and frequently engaged members of the New York opera house's company. Directing this new Metropolitan Opera production is the librettist, Tom Cairns, with the composer himself serving as conductor.

The 'Metropolitan Opera Live in HD” transmissions have been made possible through the cooperation of our partner, Cikánek Management.
