This concert featuring Italy's greatest symphonic composers of the 19th and 20th centuries and the world-famous Nora Fischer, who shares more than just a name with Iván Fischer, will see bridges being built between generations, eras and styles.

At the Bridging Europe festival, the elder Fischer will also show how Luciano Berio and Ottorino Respighi reinterpreted the music of earlier eras. The programme consists of both these types of treatments and the composers' own independent works. Independent works - this is a term that could also be used to describe Rendering, for while the piece is built on Schubert's outlines, Berio's version is much more than just a revision. Although the Austrian composer's notes reveal the plans for a Symphony No. 10, the flavouring from Berio's music turns it into the thrilling base ingredient for some thrilling vibrations between eras. Folk Songs raises bridges between many nations, ranging from America, France and Italy to Armenia and Azerbaijan: the 11 songs are sung in a total of nine languages and dialects. The cycle, which was written specifically to showcase the singular technical abilities of Cathy Berberian, Berio's first wife and a top singer of her time, will this time be performed by Nora Fischer, an extremely colourful personality who is equally comfortable among different styles and languages. The composer Louis Andriessen has described this highly versatile artist as a worthy successor to Berberian.
