If a ranking were made of the number of times Mendelssohn's piano concertos have been performed, there is a good chance the allegro brillante would come out on top. Mendelssohn's compositions were characterised by fluid melodies, brilliant virtuosity and an early Romantic, fairy tale-like quality, while the monumental structures of Bruckner's symphonies were inspired by Wagner's music dramas and centuries of German ecclesiastical and secular music. This concert offers an imaginary stroll through Mendelssohn's garden of faries and Bruckner's cathedral.
The contrasting harmonies are also reflected by the personalities of the performers, with Gergely Bogányi, the piano concert's soloist, also known for his large-scale - in one case of world record size - shows, while his brother, the conductor Tibor Bogányi, has achieved worldwide renown for his fiery yet delicate, at times improvisational conducting style. This concert promises to be a real pleasue for those of us who harbour Romantic inclinations and like to marvel, to wonder and to dream big.
