It is no accident that the two Romeo and Juliet suites are the Russian composer's most popular works, since they retell the timeless tale with both character and a unique voice. Although Gilbert Varga started out playing the same instrument as his father, the legendary violinist and conductor Tibor Varga, his promising career as a soloist was cut short by an accident. This led him to the conductor's podium, where he has pursued a career of nearly unrivalled variety: it has taken him to the great American orchestras, to the Philharmonia Hungarica - which was joined on its first tour of Hungary by Yehudi Menuhin - and all the way to Taiwan, where he remains music director today. Kristóf Baráti is one of the most sought-after violinists of our time, making him yet another world traveller.
