Is there such a thing as the Slavic soul? And if there is, can it be captured through the works of the great Slavic composers? In an attempt to answer this question, the Pannon Philharmonic has compiled a sophisticated concert programme that contains both a practically unknown Kabalevsky overture and Tchaikovsky's popular Violin Concerto.

As always, of course, this is a question that will have to be answered by the audience, but fortunately they will have the outstanding violinist Benjamin Schmid and conductor Tibor Bogányi to help them. Tchaikovsky wrote was is perhaps the most frequently played Romantic violin concerto for his friend Leopold Auer, who was born in the Hungarian city of Veszprém and went on to spend half a century as Saint Petersburg's leading violinist, partnering with such luminaries as Alexander Borodin, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Anton Rubinstein and Marius Petipa. The concerto is deserving of its reputation: its slow melancholic movement and its virtuosically fast and exuberant one are each examples of both mature Romanticism and Slavic emotion.
"I am a big fan of the principal conductor, Tibor Bogányi, because he guides the music to where it should be: perfection not for perfection's sake, but for the sake of the music...” (Benjamin Schmid)
