Giuseppe Verdi's output of chamber music is dwarfed by his enormous operatic oeuvre, as all he left behind were a single string quartet and around 30 piano pieces. Nevertheless, in order to understand the path taken in life by this epochal genius responsible for numerous innovations in 19th-century opera, one must also discover his songs, practically unknown to the general audience, in all their variety and beauty. This is because the great composer imbued them with the same qualities as his grandiose operas: simultaneous drama and humour, lyricism of lace-like delicacy, unbridled passion, smouldering love and quiet solitude, pain and happiness. Albeit in miniature, deep down, the songs capture the bitterness of Rigoletto, the infinite passion of Leonora, the innocence of Desdemona, the confusion of Alvaro, the endless charm of Nannetta and the tragedy of Violetta, along with all of Verdi's other familiar heroes of the stage.
The artists of the Hungarian National Choir have selected around a score of songs from a half-century of output. The oldest predates Nabucco, the composer's first operatic triumph, and the final one was composed in the year after Falstaff. Some of the songs have never been performed in Hungary before.
