What does an orchestral musician get to do a lot? Play the symphonic repertoire, of course. And what is it that they don't get to perform so much? Chamber music. This despite the fact that the latter is full of joy, freedom and variety - and inspiration for self-expression. The Open rehearsal room series offers them a chance to engage in all this.

And naturally, not just that. At its now traditional rehearsal room concerts, the Hungarian National Philharmonic offers the opportunity for the ensemble to create a much more personal atmosphere, thus establishing a more direct relationship with the audience. It is no coincidence that we call these 'conversational concerts' or that the presenter is always one of the orchestra's musicians, conductors or other officers. It is also important for as many of the orchestra's outstanding members as possible to get the opportunity to appear at these concerts - with 21 artists taking the stage on this occasion. Last but not least, another aim of these concerts is to draw attention, by way of the selected works, to exciting but rarely played stand-outs of the chamber music repertoire.
This will occur at this afternoon's concert - which along with Dohnányi's Piano Quintet in C minor - also includes such novelties as Ferenc Doppler's Duettino hongrois, Stravinsky's Septet and Beethoven's undeservedly rarely played Serenade in D major. A colourful selection from the Viennese classics to the 20th century! And let us not forget, either, what an interesting experience it is for the audience to be admitted to the orchestra's 'inner sanctum' and hear the musicians play in the same place where, on weekday mornings, they rehearse the concerts they will later perform in the concert hall.
