This festival marking the birthday of Johann Sebastian Bach features concerts in churches, concert halls, underpasses and squaresand outstanding musicians celebrating the Baroque master with free concerts in public places around the world. Seven days of Bach being played everywhere, including Budapest!

The international Bach in the Subways programme was launched by New York cellist Dale Henderson in 2010- with the intent of increasing interest in classical music. The objective of the festival really is to bring classical music to everyone, which is why the organisers inspire the artists involved to perform concerts in surprising locations where concerts are not ordinarily held and to incorporate special elements into them. The festival's diverse offering of concerts, unique programmes and educational performance have the can present the Baroque era and classical culture to the concert-going audience in a new light. Several elements of the programme offering also enable the audience to join the artists as they perform as they perform, and the children's, youth and family programmes are intended to cultivate the next generation of the music-listening audience.

Orphaned by the untimely death of his parents, J.S. Bach wound up in the care of his older brother Johann Christoph Bach. Legend has it that what the young Sebastian longed for more than anything at that time was his brother's coveted collection of manuscripts of works by the most important master keyboard players of the era. Since he was not allowed use of the volume, at night he would filch it from the score cabinet and copy the masterpieces in it by moonlight. We are fortunate in that a large portion of these manuscripts have survived, and eventually the young Sebastian's own initial keyboard works would also wind up in the collection. At the concert, we will get to hear a selection from these volumes, which will provide an idea of what the young genius' musical world was like, as well as what works and composers had an influence on his development.
