Throughout his entire life, Michael Haydn (1737-1806), the younger brother by five years of the today better-known Joseph Haydn, was recognised across Europe for his church music to a degree that surpassed even his world-famous older sibling's reputation in this area. The younger Haydn's life was linked to Hungary in many respects: his first serious job was in Nagyvárad (Oradea). After the years he spent there, he ended up in Salzburg, where he remained for more than four decades in the service of the prince-archbishop until his death in 1806
His Requiem Mass in C minor (MH 155), was written at the end of December 1771 partly in memory of Count Sigismund von Schrattenbach, the universally beloved and respected prince-archbishop of Salzburg, who had died on 16 December. What also might have played a key role in the genesis of the work was the death of his young daughter, Aloysia Antonia, not long before. The Requiem in C minor is one of the most significant such works of the 18th century, and both the then 16-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his father, Leopold Mozart, were present at its world première held in January 1772. In any case, the work served as a clear and primary model for Mozart twenty years later when he was writing his own - universally valid - requiem mass (K. 626).
This concert features both masterpieces - the requiem masses of Michael Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - being performed back to back. (György Vashegyi)
