Handel's Messiah was first performed in 1742, in Dublin, as part of a competition set up to benefit an orphanage. A year later, Handel presented it in London - again for a philanthropic effort. Messiah would then go on to be performed - more than 30 times during the lifetime of the composer - for other charitable purposes. After his death, it also played a role in the memorial celebration of the composer's life. The first part of the work deals with the times before the birth of Christ, while the second relates the story of his suffering. The third part is one of reflection. The oratorio's character is defined by the choral movements.
