A worthy partner in a work by Mozart rich in chamber music sections is Máté Szűcs, who served as the Berlin Philharmonic's first principal viola before leaving to join the faculty of the Geneva University of Music in 2018.
Anton Bruckner (1824-1896) spent seven years composing his final symphony, and even though he was still labouring on it shortly before his death, he was never able to complete the closing movement of the massive work. Numerous musicologists and composers have attempted to complete the fragment, and many recordings have been made of the various versions. The deeply religious Bruckner let it be known that, as he had dedicated two of his major works to temporal potentates, he would devote the final one to 'God himself'. In this symphony, he gazes out into the music of the future having already created a summary of his work as a symphonist in his preceding Symphony No. 8. His harmonics foreshadow both the later works of Mahler and Schönberg, while the 'acoustic carpet' of the Adagio presages Sibelius, and the Scherzo the early works of Stravinsky.
