It was exactly a decade ago that we lost Frigyes Hidas. His beautiful and elegiac 1998 work emanating endless sadness is an outstanding example of the clever and imaginative compositions written by the "last of the Hungarian Romantic composers”, whose music was also highly emotive and had a unique tone. Led by Attila, the Huns clashed with the legions of the Western Roman Empire at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains, and it was a painting depicting this conflict that inspired Ferenc Liszt to compose this legend pitting the ghosts of fallen Huns and Christians against each other in battle.
