The Moldau is the second in Bedřich Smetana's orchestral cycle My Homeland, a set of six symphonic poems expressing the history, legends and natural beauties of the composer's Czech motherland. Following the incomparably lovely river from its source as a little brook in the Czech forest all the way to the sea, it depicts all the romance of its picturesque banks. György Ránki composed his brilliant 1989 four-movement suite for wind orchestra from a few excerpts from his ballet comedy The Magic Potion, or the Enmity of Fishermen, and it has since gone on to become a beloved standalone part of the orchestral concert repertoire.
It was exactly a decade ago that we lost Frigyes Hidas. His beautiful and elegiac 1998 work emanating endless sadness is an outstanding example of the clever and imaginative compositions written by the "last of the Hungarian Romantic composers”, whose music was also highly emotive and had a unique tone. Led by Attila, the Huns clashed with the legions of the Western Roman Empire at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains, and it was a painting depicting this conflict that inspired Ferenc Liszt to compose this legend pitting the ghosts of fallen Huns and Christians against each other in battle.
