A Muziektheater Transparant (Belgium) production.

Leoš Janáček (1854-1928) wrote this song cycle about a lovestruck village boy in 22 scenes. This cycle for voice and piano tells the story of a lad named Janik, who falls in love with the Gypsy girl Zekfa and gives up everything to follow her. This riveting tale inspired the extraordinarily talented Belgian artist Annelies Van Parys to write new works, supplementing Janáček's creation with her own compositions with great delicacy and respect. The production is an intimate miniature that engages with themes of passion, exclusion and identity. One particularly interesting aspect is the fact that Janáček was 63 years old when he wrote the song cycle The Diary of One Who Disappeared, and based it on the unrequited love he felt for a married woman 36 years his junior.
Belgium's Ivo van Hove is the founder of Toneelgroep Amsterdam and one of today's most cutting-edge experimental directors. He has been involved with numerous opera and theatrical productions, earning prestigious awards for his work.
