One of Müpa Budapest's loveliest traditions is that of starting the new year with the music of Haydn. Although the two great oratorios, Die Schöpfung ("The Creation”) and Die Jahreszeiten ("The Seasons”), are played in loose rotation, it is the more primal, so to speak, of the two opuses - dealing, as it does, with the formation of the universe - that has come to dominate over the years.

With the first day of 2018, we will get the chance to witness the Great Work, the creation of "heaven and earth, and all that is seen and unseen”, and this time with an orchestra that itself can claim to have something to do with creation - or more precisely with one of its most wonderful aspects: learning. Milan's Teatro alla Scala Academy Orchestra is not the opera house's ensemble, but rather that of the academy maintained and operated by La Scala. This educational institution provides instruction in four departments - music, ballet, scenic design and management - which is to say in every area related to music theatre. The work takes place in collaboration with the opera house itself through joint projects. Joining the soloists and chorus of The Creation, therefore, will be an orchestra of enthusiastic youngsters. And those who have heard youth orchestras know that their standard is usually extraordinarily high, often matching and occasionally exceeding those of some world-class professional ensembles.
At the Wagner in Budapest Opera Festival he heads at Müpa Budapest each year, Adam Fischer always discovers something new to reveal in the music. But Wagner is not the end of it. Together with the soloists performing The Creation under his baton, he invariably adds new colours to this work as well, adding to the rich tradition of performance in the Hungarian capital.
