Yet another concert from the Hungarian National Philharmonic offering a programme, this one consisting purely of works by Russian composers, that is perfectly integrated in concept, and yet varied, with a young, internationally acclaimed Hungarian conductor and an outstanding and likewise young Russian cellist. The pieces to be played - even though Tchaikovsky's two compositions date from 1877 and 1880, and Prokofiev's lone one from 1917 - were all conceived under the spell of the Classical style, recreating the same lightness and translucent sound that characterised the era of Mozart and Haydn.
With his entire career still ahead of him, Gábor Hontvári recently shared second prize at the Sir Georg Solti International Conductors' Competition in Frankfurt, one of the most prestigious contests of its kind in the world. A graduate of Budapest's Liszt Academy and Weimar's Franz Liszt Hochschule für Musik, he serves as the first conductor and deputy music director of the Mainfranken Theater in Würzburg. The soloist for the concert, Alexander Ramm, was born in Vladivostok in 1988. He studied at Moscow's Tchaikovsky Conservatory and won a silver medal at the city's International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2015. He has performed with conductors like Vladimir Jurowski and Valery Gergiev and partnered with such musicians as Julian Rachlin and Denis Matsuev. Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme appends eight charmingly light and elegant variations to the composer's own classicizing melody. Prokofiev's Classical Symphony is an early masterpiece of the Neoclassical style from the beginning of the last century, characterised by a lightness similar to that employed by Tchaikovsky, an admirer of Mozart, in his Serenade for Strings exactly four decades earlier. With its clear form, sense of balance and rounded melodies, this work also owes a debt to the Classical. It also reveals Slavic flavors, as well as a waltz, which was already a popular genre of the Romantic era.
