The BFO is the only symphony orchestra in the world to operate its own built-in Baroque ensemble, making it no coincidence that this group of early music specialists, together with Johann Sebastian Bach, are receiving a key role this season.

Iván Fischer always starts the Budapest Festival Orchestra's rehearsals with a Bach chorale - this is a kind of entrance, an intonation exercise. Our audience also gets the chance to take part in a similarly intimate experience three times during the season, when we open the symphonic concerts with a performance of Baroque music, playing pieces by Bach on period instruments. "The orchestra of the future,” Fischer contends, "will be like a production company that is capable of mounting concerts of symphonic, early and contemporary music, along with operas and even functioning as a chorus.”
Seven-time Grammy Award-winning pianist Emanuel Ax would be a perfect fit for the "orchestra of the future”, since he remains steadfastly dedicated to contemporary composers, with several world premières to his name in recent years, even as he joins the BFO at these concerts to perform a true classic that remains popular despite its sombre and serious tone: Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor.
In his Symphony No. 4, Tchaikovsky does battle with the hand of fate lurking all around us, but nevertheless eventually prescribes happiness as our best medicine. The composer put a tremendous amount of work into this piece, and was very fond of it, to the point of preferring it to anything else he had written up to the point. Although there were many at the work's première who doubted its power, even considering it semi-barbaric and immature, today it enjoys a worthy place in the symphonic canon.
