The Cantemus Choir, selected to be Müpa Budapest's Ensemble of the 2017/18 Season, is actually not just a single choir, but a family of them. The story began in Nyíregyháza more than four decades ago, in 1975 to be exact, when teacher and choirmaster Dénes Szabó founded the Cantemus Children's Choir with older students from the city's Primary School No. 4. As the years passed, former members too old for the children's choir would go on to establish the Pro Musica Girls' Choir, as well as the Banchieri Vocal Ensemble and the Cantemus Mixed Choir. Later, Dénes's son Soma Szabó would also join in with the teaching work, which - since the "original choir” had been formed inside a school's music department - was carried out according to Kodály's pedagogical principals from the very beginning. Attesting to the quality of the artistic achievements of the choirs and their choirmasters are the countless awards, recognitions and victories at competitions that have been amassed over the decades, as do the many concerts, albums and radio and television recordings they have to their name. Today, the Cantemus family of choirs is an indispensable part of the Hungarian concert scene.
With a stylistically rich programme ranging from Palestrina to John Rutter, their Advent concert is a worthy demonstration of the Cantemus choirs' skill, versatility and flexibility. By means of the pure sound of the human voice, this concert will elevate the joyful anticipation of Christmas to the spheres of the angels. Works by composers who could not be further apart stylistically, like Schütz, Britten, Handel and Miklós Kocsár, will come together to create a harmony of surprising clarity, becoming as one in the mystery of Advent to create a single overarching Christmas feeling.

The concert will be preceded from 6.30 pm by a conversation entitled Prelude, where ticket holders will be invited to get to know the performing musician and the works to be performed more closely.
